Oil Pulling

2012-12-01 07.36.47

Okay. I'd better post about this for two reasons:
1 - If you read my 'routine' gratitude post, I promised I would, and
2 - It has changed my world.

So ... several years ago I started having sinus problems.
After a severe sinus infection following a trip to New Jersey in 2006
I have always kept Sudafed and Advil on hand and used them
quite regularly - but never on a daily basis - until we moved to Oregon ...

Something about the humidity, the change in elevation and the climate
caused my sinuses to go haywire, and I literally took Sudafed and Advil
EVERY DAY (sometimes twice a day) for about a month and a half.
I wanted to give it some time to see if it would get better on it's own,
but alas, it did not!

I finally got sick enough of it that I started doing a little research
and that is when I came across 'oil pulling' -
I read and researched and googled pros and cons (of which I found none) ...
and then I headed to the store to get some coconut oil.

Here is the reason why:

"Oil pulling traces it roots to oil gargling practiced in Ayurvedic medicine. Oil pulling as we know it today, was introduced in 1992 by Dr. F. Karach, MD. Dr. Karach claimed that oil pulling could cure a variety of illnesses ranging from heart disease and digestive troubles to hormonal disorders.

"The oil is “worked” in the mouth by pushing, pulling, and drawing it through the teeth for a period of 15 to 20 minutes. It is done one to three times a day on an empty stomach. The best time is in the morning before eating breakfast, but can be done before any meal. The used oil is discarded and the mouth rinsed out with water. The oil is never swallowed because it is loaded with bacteria, toxins, pus, and mucous.

"The oil acts like a cleanser. When you put it in your mouth and work it around your teeth and gums it “pulls” out bacteria and other debris. It acts much like the oil you put in your car engine. The oil picks up dirt and grime. When you drain the oil, it pulls out the dirt and grime with it, leaving the engine relatively clean. Consequently, the engine runs smoother and lasts longer. Likewise, when we expel harmful substances from our bodies our health is improved and we run smoother and last longer.

"As simple as it is, oil pulling has a very powerful detoxifying effect. Our mouths are the home to billions of bacteria, viruses, fungi and other parasites and their toxins. Candida and Streptococcus are common residents in our mouths. It is these types of germs and their toxic waste products that cause gum disease and tooth decay and contribute to many other health problems including arthritis and heart disease. Our immune system is constantly fighting these troublemakers. If our immune system becomes overloaded or burdened by excessive stress, poor diet, environmental toxins and such, these organisms can spread throughout the body causing secondary infections and chronic inflammation, leading to any number of health problems.

"Oil pulling is incredibly effective in brightening teeth, healing gums, preventing bad breath, quenching inflammation, and healing oral infections. It is also effective in treating many systemic conditions throughout the body." - - Information taken from THIS ARTICLE.

I have now been 'pulling' on a daily basis for about two months
and I cannot believe the difference that it has made!
I have taken Sudafed a total of 6 times in the last two months
(which is MUCH better than one a day),
and my Advil consumption is now reserved for aches and pains
that result from other random things - you know - the normal reason why people take it!

Nate started pulling soon after I did and his headache suffering
has been reduced dramatically, as well as improved sinuses,
less achy joints, and feeling better overall.

Anyway - so that is it!
It is a little time consuming, but also can be quite entertaining if you are
pulling at the same time and try to communicate - especially if
only one of you knows sign language!! :)

Anyway, if you try it out, I'd love to hear about your experience!

... the orange field ...

A few weeks back (before it got rainy)
we hopped on Redwood Highway and made our way out of town!
We had some time and decided we wanted to explore!

2012-11-14 15.16.58

We drove for a bit, and as we drove and talked and watched
out the window, we saw this beautiful field!

DSC_0023

We took the turn off so that we could explore a little more, and this is what we found!

We looked and looked for signs to try to figure out exactly what was growing in this field ...

DSC_0042

... but we couldn't find anything indicating what it is!
We even came home and googled 'orange field' near Cave Junction, Oregon,
but we came up blank.

So we have no idea what it is (maybe a vineyard??), but we are in love with it,
and we are so glad that we happened up on it before the rain came
and turned it's colors from orange to something 'winter' ish!

On our way back home, we turned down another road, and look at what we found:

Sleepy Hollow Loop and Ichabod Lane!

We had a wonderful, beautiful drive on this random day off of Nate's -
it was lovely and exactly what we needed at the time!!

... November 2012 Gratitude List ...

We Are Grateful For ... 11/1: Halloween and seeing all the adorable kiddos dressed up in their costumes!! They really make us smile!! 11/2: Cell Phones. Every day we talk on his breaks - both of them - for the whole time ... we are grateful for cell phones - they help us miss each other just a little less when we are apart! 11/3: A nice dinner date to help us unwind from our day! 11/4: A whole extra hour to snuggle before starting our day today!! 11/5: Leftovers! Good meals when you don't feel well are much easier to deal with when you cooked well the day before!! 11/6: We are grateful that Rascal is okay today! Our late night/long drive vet visit last night was nerve - wracking, but she's been acting better today, and we are grateful! 11/7: We are so grateful for Nate's job, but we are also grateful that today is day 7 of Nate's 7 day run so that he can have a few days off! 11/8: Today we are very grateful for a day to spend together!! 11/9: Naps on the couch - exactly what days off are meant for! 11/10: Each other. This may seem redundant, but the fact that we still hug each other tightly and kiss each other deeply before Nate goes to work every day, and that we miss each other while he is at work, is something that we are extremely grateful for and don't take for granted, especially after we have been together for so long! 11/11: Sweaters, warm socks, blankets and snuggles on a chilly evening! 11/12: We are grateful for our crazy and adorable nephews and nieces, and for the technology that is available so that we can keep in touch with them on a consistent basis!! (Skype, text, email, FB)!! 11/13: We got a really nice letter from Nate's grandma today, and we are grateful to know that we are loved and missed! 11/14: Pinterest! We are grateful for Pinterest because it provides us with recipes that we otherwise would have never attempted - today we had lime chicken tacos and homemade donuts!! 11/15: Our home! We have noticed a lot of homeless people around town. They always remind us to be grateful, but it is getting cold and closer to the holidays, and our gratitude for our home has increased greatly. 11/16: Cheesy movies (i.e. Stick It) to help us unwind from the week!! Also that Nate finally has a Friday night off!! 11/17: Groceries! This is kind of the same thought as being grateful for our home, but we are grateful that we have enough money for groceries - for healthy meals and crackers and cheese and chocolate! 11/18: Families. We are so grateful for our families. We love them and we miss them so much! 11/19: Beautifulness (we think it's a word). It is a rainy day today, but there were a few moments where the blue sky broke through right above the mountains and it was absolutely gorgeous! 11/20: We are extremely grateful for Nate's creativity and daring-ness in the kitchen!! He turned what should have been a disastrous dinner into something wonderful!! 11/21: Music!! Whenever we are doing anything remotely productive in our house, music is a necessity! Tonight, while we prep for Thanksgiving tomorrow, it is definitely a must have!! 11/22: We are grateful for a wonderful dinner and for wonderful company! We are so glad that Tom could join us for Thanksgiving!! 11/23: Modern conveniences! Our dryer bit the dust and we are in the process of looking for a new one - sometimes we take for granted the simple act of doing laundry until something goes wrong and we realize how easy we really do have it!! 11/24: Getting out and staying in! I enjoy getting out of the house, Nate enjoys staying in when he is off work - luckily our schedules, to do lists and interests allow us both to be happy and balance out!! 11/25: Christmas Lights!! We put up our Christmas Tree and our other Christmas Decor and we just love the 'specialness' of having the Christmas lights up around the house! 11/26: Raid! Every once in a while our kitchen gets attacked (such as today) and we are grateful for Raid because it makes the war against them much easier!! 11/27: Life, memories and sweet Grandma McCombs! She passed away early this morning and we are so grateful for the life that she led and for the sweet memories that we have of her!! 11/28: Texts from our siblings that include photos of our nephews and nieces!! They make us smile our biggest smiles and bring so much joy to our day! 11/29: Mid week movie dates! Getting out of the house and spending a couple hours in Forks, WA through Southgate Cinema helped take our minds of things this week, and we are grateful for that! 11/30: Being grateful. We are grateful for our gratitude! These lists are always fun for us to do because we can look back over the month and see just how much we have to be grateful for!

30 Days of Gratitude Photo Challenge - Day 30

Self Portrait

 Aren't photo challenges lovely?
You shoot the photos of the things that you are grateful for,
you post on your blog about what you are grateful for,
and then you get to the last day and you are
challenged to post about yourself.

Hmmm ...

2012-11-30 10.10.44

I thought about cheating and having Nate take a picture of me,
or skipping the post,
but aside from a few posts that had no pictures,
I feel like I did pretty darn good through
this challenge, so I wanted to end it on a good note.

Sometimes when I see pictures of myself, I look at
the girl in the picture with critical eyes. How does my smile look,
is my hair all right, is my make up smudged?
I have all those thoughts, and now I wonder why?
I think that I am my harshest critic, and while I'm
grateful to feel so loved, I hate that I am so self critical.

I am naturally a happy person. I'm friendly, I'm funny,
I'm compassionate and I'm quirky -
those things are what makes me who I am,
and I'm grateful to know those things about myself
so that on those days when I'm my harshest critic,
I can look at myself in a different way and pick out
the things that are best about me!

Photos, gratitude, challenges - my November was
interesting and definitely more meaningful as I
viewed my life from a different angle through
this project!!

30 Days of Gratitude Photo Challlenge - Day 29

* L I G H T *

I'm cheating with today's post -
I don't have a photo (gasp!)

But really, I am so grateful for light!
Since the time change, it starts getting dark here at about 4:30!
It is crazy!
As soon as I wake up in the morning
I open up the blinds, even on the rainiest of days,
just to soak up any light that might come in
(and for Rascal - I don't want her going stir crazy)!

I can usually get away with doing my work
by natural lighting when I open up all of the blinds,
and for some reason, I just love doing that!

I am grateful for light and for the
time of day that lets me open up my windows
and soak it all up!!

30 Days of Gratitude Photo Challenge - Day 28

Nighttime

2012-12-03 17.06.40

Ahhh nighttime ...
the time of day when work is over,
when Nate is home,
when the couch and a blanket call our name ...

Nighttime is a wonderful part of the day -
to me, it means that we had a day well spent
(most days, some days we like to be lazy)
and it means that it's time to refresh, unwind and relax -
and I am always grateful for the time to refresh, unwind and relax!!

30 Days of Gratitude Photo Challenge - Day 27

 DAILY ROUTINE

Have I mentioned how much I am loving my life right now?
Thinking about my daily routine has made me reminisce about my college life -
especially my very last Semester when routine was thrown
OUT the window and my schedule took over my life.

I hope that I have been able to convey just how much
I am loving my life right now, at this stage, here in Oregon!
I love that even though Nate's work schedule is varied,
our routine is pretty set!!

Our alarm clock (a.k.a. Rascal) goes off at
about 7:00 every morning. Some days we're up before then,
some days we're cursing the day we thought pets were good ideas,
but without fail - between 7 and 7:30 she wakes us up
so that we can feed her and give her her morning dose of medication!
We have it worked out so that I take the 'morning shift' and
Nate takes the 'evening shift' (yes, we do this twice a day).

2012-12-01 07.37.01

After Rascal is fed, I usually jump on the computer for some
'non' work time - you know - Facebook, e-mail,
blogging, pinterest ...(the really important stuff ;)
During this time, if Nate hasn't gone to work yet or if he works a later shift,
he'll make his way down the stairs,
and we'll commence in our daily oil pulling.
(I'll talk more about that in a later post - we're not crazy, I promise!)

2012-12-01 07.36.47

We get ready for the day, get some breakfast, and
then we usually get to work!
I try to keep my work hours within Nate's work hours
so that when he is home, I can be 'home' with him,
and we manage pretty well that way!
Some days I have errands to run or a house to clean,
but most days, it works out pretty darn good!

2012-12-01 07.37.44

Somewhere in our days we manage to run our errands
in the very, very rainy weather (which we LOVE)!

2012-11-24 14.04.10

Our end of the day routine includes dinner, snuggling on the
couch through an episode or two of something on Netflix,
giving Rascal her nightly dose of food and medication,
and then calling it a night!!

As you can see, my life is pretty simple right now!
On Nate's days off we'll go for a drive and explore the town
a little more, or we'll grab some lunch at a restaurant that
we have yet to try, or we'll make a candlelight dinner ...
we try to make his days off special somehow!

I am grateful for my simple, quiet life!
I know that in a few months when my job at the law office is up
my routine will change into a new one, that I'll hopefully love just as much!
