Grandpa

This is my sweet grandpa.

My sweet grandpa passed away early last Monday morning.

This week has been a week of tears, a week of rejoicing, a week of reminiscing, a week of family, and a week of love. I have been able to spend some wonderful time with two of my sisters and my brother:

And I have seen family that I have not seen for years. Literally.

The services for grandpa were held yesterday. It was a beautiful, bittersweet day. Grandpa was a wonderful man. He was kind, he was honest, he never said a bad word about anybody. He is known for saying "I may not have any money, but I am the richest man in the world." Grandpa loved his family. He was so proud of each one of his family members and he loved us all so unconditionally.

Grandpa is happy now. He is healthy and he is better. I am so grateful to know that someday I will see him again. I am also grateful to know that he will be up in Heaven fighting for me.

I am so grateful for my grandpa and for the example of love and marriage and all around goodness that he was. I will miss him, but I know that I will see him again, and that brings me joy.

Nikki the Nikon

Here she is. Nikkie the Nikon - in all her beautiful glory. And being loved by me.

It's been three days since we made this purchase. And we LUHV it! No buyers remorse here!

The first day it was dark. Rascal was my subject. She didn't like it. Oh well.

The second day we worked. We worked then we shot. I went to the park. We went to Third Dam. It was AMAZING!

Today. We woke up. We got Jamba's. We drove. We shot. We shot. We shot. And shot. And we talked. And we had a great morning.

Check out my photo blog for more. If they're not there when you look, check back, they'll be there soon!

Happy Tax Returns!

Today was a giddy little day for us!

After sitting through six l-o-n-g hours of classes, we headed down to Inkley's and got us one of these:

Isn't she BeAuTiFuL?!? She is! And she is ours!

I am quite looking forward to working tomorrow. Why? Because the quicker I get to work the quicker I can leave...

Then...

I get to go shooting! Just me and the camera!

Check out my photo blog in the next few days, I'm sure there will be some new posts!

Belgium Bound

My sister and her family are headed to Belgium, but they made one last stop in Utah before their big trip! We had such a great time hanging out with them and playing with the kids!

Some of my favorite activities while they were here included:

Snuggling our nieces and trying to sneak pictures of Hallie G!

Watching Nate woo little J! She ADORED him this trip!!

Hanging out & playing cards with Ty & Dev!

Getting a very special manicure and pedicure from Hallie! My nails were SOOO pretty!

And, of course, cleaning the sink at Angies!

It was tough for us to say goodbye to so many people we love in a matter of 48ish hours, but as with Nate's parents, even though we will miss them fiercely, we are excited for Jess & Phuc and for the opportunities that they will have!!

Hardware Ranch

This last weekend we headed up to Hardware Ranch with my sister and her kiddos! Growing up here, I'm kind of ashamed to say it was my very first time up there, but I finally made it! :) We had a good, chilly time! Here are some pics from our adventures!

The New Yorkers

And it's done. They've officially done it. The New Yorkers have settled ... until they find a house ... then they'll settle there!

The last few months have been a hubbub of activity and preparation for Carl & Lynnette to sell their home and make the move to the Big Apple! We have been spending an enormous amount of time with Nate's awesome family - cleaning, eating, organizing, reminiscing, talking, memory making and picture taking!

It was sad to walk through the empty house on Thursday. It was sadder to say goodbye to them on Saturday. But even through the sadness, we all know that this is the right move for them and we are so excited for the opportunities that they are going to have! And, I'll be honest, we're really excited to go and visit them :)

Here are a few of the photos that we got over that last little while...

To Carl & Lynnette - we love you and we wish you the best of luck!! AND, we'll skype you later!! :)

Happy {Heart} Day

Our Valentine's Day this year was pretty low key because we had so much going on! On Friday evening we went to "Valentine's Day," (it was your typical Valentine's Day type of love story, so I, of course, enjoyed it a lot), on Saturday Nate surprised me with some beautiful flowers, and on the actual day of, we hung out with Nate's family to celebrate birthdays and to enjoy each others company before the big move!

To Nate: you already know this, but some days I can't believe how lucky I am to have you in my life. Not many people have a husband who supports them so much, who loves them so unconditionally, and who is truly their best friend. I Love You! XOXO

The Little Clar That Could

"I thought I could, I thought I could, I thought I could" ... and so far I have.

This is my crazy week. You know, the one that I wanted to punch.

And I'm surviving.

Do any of you watch "Reba?" I don't really, but this morning in the shower her theme song came into my head. I don't really think that her theme song was written about the craziness that is my life right now, but I liked the thought of it anyway. (If you don't know what her theme song is, it simply says "I'm a survivor" over and over and over.)

Today is Wednesday. I have successfully picked up my sister from the airport. (And may I add that I also accomplished my very first drive to Salt Lake City ALONE, EVER! It's kind of a big deal for me.) I now have a piano in my bedroom (yes. in my bedroom. don't ask.) I have written two papers that are due tomorrow. I am taking a break from studying for two tests that I have tomorrow.

After tomorrow, it is all about the family.

It is about spending quality time. It is about taking lots of pictures. It is about saying what you mean to say. It is about saying "skype you later" and "see you soon." It is about being brave and wiping tears.

This week is almost over. I've done it. My hair hasn't been ripped out. My Dr. Pepper supply is still available. My husband still loves me.

Three more days. "I know I can, I know I can, I know I can."

Good News Tuesday

Remember our friends, the D's? The ones who have been in the middle of a 2.5 year adoption process? Well, they finally got the call! They get to head down to Mexico TOMORROW to finish up the process and next time we see them, they'll have their kiddos! We are so excited for them and feel so blessed that we have been able to experience this process with them! I CAN'T WAIT to meet Omar & Marisol and to love them as much as I love the other kiddos in my life!! (And to take endless photos of them, of course)

To Eric & Brynn: your strength has been amazing and we are so proud and so honored to know you! Travel safely and we can't wait to see you in a couple of weeks! Love you!

Here's to happy endings!!

... busy ... busy ... busy ...

As you know, it has been a busy couple of months for Nate & I! I had a few quite minutes this morning and decided to do a quick journaling blog to avoid having to play major catch up later! So, here goes!

Britt & I threw a shower for our bestest friend Brynners, who is adoptiong two seriously beautiful kids from Mexico! It has been a a two and a half year process and they are getting SO close to getting them home! We love them and we are SO excited for them to get their kids home! (And don't judge the way we look in the picture, this was after the shower and we were all exhausted)!

In the process of cleaning out this house and helping Nate's parents getting ready to move, we have been finding some gems!

This is the Nativity that Nate has seen at his house EVERY Christmas! Because we have a nice Nativity now, he opted to take a picture of it to remember it by rather than bring it to our house to grace our presence every year!

We've also been organizing photos and have found some awesome pictures! I've scanned in a bunch of them and I'll dedicate a post to them later, but for now, here is one! Hee Hee Hee!

Nate & I bought a web cam so that we could keep in better touch with our family that we live far away from via SKYPE! We love it! One of the reasons that we love it is because you can photograph what is happening on the other end! That means pictures of my nephews whenever I want them! That makes me a happy auntie!

There were a couple of days where the trees here were frosted over and they were absolutely beautiful! I skipped one of my classes to take some photos of the absolutely gorgeous trees! Here is a small sample! If you want to see the rest, they are on my photo blog!

We've spent a lot of time hanging out with our adorable nephews and nieces! The other night Nate got jumped by Sam, Jack & Lizzie and spent a good 40 minutes being wrestled! It was hilarious and the kids had a blast! He is such a good uncle!

And we watched the Grammy's! Did you see them? They were so good this year! And they had an amazing tribute to Michael Jackson! I know that most people out there are no longer fans, but growing up, he was big in our house (until he turned strange), and I LOVED this!

Well I think that catches us up until the big Valentine's Day, but I haven't uploaded pics yet!

This week is going to bring a piano to our bedroom, a sister's family from Colorado, lots of homework, moving my in-laws out of their house, and saying some goodbyes! Wish us luck!

Overwhelmed

If I had 10 different me's this week, I'd be in good shape! We could reconvene every evening to conference about everything that all of my me's should know, and I wouldn't feel like I wanted to break down into tears all the time.

I am being stretched so thin right now because of things that I have to do, things I want to do, things I should do, things I said I'd do ...
and it's making me tired.

I miss me.
I miss Nate.
I miss sleeping.

I miss life.

Soon I’ll be missing people. Important people. People that I love.
I’m sad.
I’m overwhelmed.
I’m emotionally burnt out
– and my sad week hasn’t even started yet.

Yikes.

To next week – look out! I dislike you already. If you had a physical form, I’d punch you in the gut (don’t take offense, I hit like a girl).

To the week after next – you are my goal. You will provide me with minimal studies, sleep, and time with my husband.
Keep shining bright for me.
You are my beacon of saneness.
I adore you.

To now – homework, dinner, attempted sleep.
Oh, and supportive squeezes from Nate. Those always help!

Change

I'm not really a fan of change! I like things to stay the way that they are. I don't like to have to readjust my psyche when big things happen.

Unfortunately,

Change happens whether we want it to or not.

Here is a list of a few big things my psyche is readjusting for:

- My sister and her family are moving to Belgium. My brother in law is in the Air Force, and they are making their next big move. For some reason, this move is really hard for me. They have lived in Europe before (actually pretty close to where they will be at now), but I have loved having them so close to us and being able to see them in a matter of 8 hours. I am sad. I am happy that they are able to move on and that Jess is healthy and excited about their move, but I will miss them furiously.

- Nate's parents sold their house. This is going to bring about some big change for Nate & I and for the whole family. Carl got a job in New York 8ish months ago and has been working and living back there, while Lynnette has stayed and gotten the house ready to sell and spent as much time as she could with her family! We have all been praying for the house to sell, but now that it has, while remaining completely supportive to make the move easy for them, we are sad. The day has come. We love them and we will miss seeing them as often as we do.

(Sorry Carl & Lynnette, this is the only recent picture we have of you guys ... looks like we need to have a little photo shoot with the two of you before you go!)

- Onto the next item: SKYPE! This is a good change. I am excited about this change. This change means that all the family that I have that lives or is moving so far away can still be seen whenever we want to see them! Nate & I bought a web cam for our computer and have been "skypeing" this week with my sisters in New Jersey & Colorado, and we love it! This change in technology makes the other changes seem a little easier to deal with!

Change happens to me every day and even though my psyche sometimes feels exhausted, I know that the changes that I am experiencing are blessings. I am grateful for the liberties that we are blessed with that allow us to make lives for ourselves.

So to 'change' I say to you ... bring it on! We'll deal with whatever you send our way.

Courage

cour⋅age (according to dictionary.com)
Show Spelled Pronunciation [kur-ij, kuhr-]
–noun
1. the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery.
2. Obsolete. the heart as the source of emotion.
3. have the courage of one's convictions, to act in accordance with one's beliefs, esp. in spite of criticism.

Synonyms:
1. fearlessness, dauntlessness, intrepidity, pluck, spirit. Courage, bravery, valor, bravado refer to qualities of spirit and conduct. Courage permits one to face extreme dangers and difficulties without fear: to take (or lose) courage. Bravery implies true courage with daring and an intrepid boldness.

Antonyms:
1. cowardice.

Courage.
How do you know if someone is courageous?
What causes a person to look at another person and think, "Gee, they have courage! They are so full of courage I can see it bursting out of them."

Until last Semester, courage has never really been something I have thought about. I do admire people who seem to be brave - people who are adventurous, people who aren't afraid to stand up for what they believe, people who can say what they want to say when they want to say it regardless of what others may think - those are qualities that I have admired for as long as I can remember.

You see, last Semester I chose to write a paper on something that is extremely personal and close to my heart.

I was scared.

I was intimidated by those who would read it.

I was nervous about the reactions of those who are aware of it.

When I told a peer in my class what I was writing my paper on, she told me I was brave.

Me? Brave?? Those two words didn't seem to fit in the same sentence. That was the first time in my life anyone has told me I was brave. I stuck to that comment like a feather sticks to glue, and as I worked on my paper, I felt myself healing. Not physically, but emotionally... and mentally.

My thoughts, my feelings, my experience and my tears (literally) were handed in with my final draft, turned in to a stranger, someone who would grade me on my writing skills and the depth of my paper. I got an A. But, more importantly than an A, I felt good.

Slowly, I let the paper loose and into the hands of my family, of Nate's family, and of our closest friends. As nerve wracking as it was, I felt courageous. I was prepared for the awkward conversations, the emotional responses and the affirming discussions that were to follow.

The paper that I wrote was on my experience with infertility.

A lot of you know that we are experiencing this, but many of you don't. A lot of you are experiencing it yourselves. Typically, in a blog setting, I take the opposite approach to courage (I believe that word, according to dictionary.com, is cowardice). I try to write about happy things. I try to be positive and bring light and hope to those of you who actually read our blog,

but I have realized something...

If I don't let you in on who I really am, how are we truly friends? How can we truly feel of each others joy and our love IF we don't understand how that joy and love has been achieved. I have been trying to gather my courage over the last few months to post my paper on here. I have been scared and nervous.

I have been a coward.

Then...

I read the blog of a truly courageous friend. She has had a hard couple of months and her bravery to post about it inspired me. There are many people out there who have shared her struggles, and her faith and her attitude are so inspiring. She has given me the courage to make the decision. She, unknowingly, has helped me to take the next step.

Here is my paper.
I am trusting you with it.

This is my life.

This is my heart.

Please treat them with respect. If you know someone who is struggling, please feel free to share it with them, but please give credit where credit is due.

Thank you.

Clarissa Law
Personal Essay
December 1, 2009
Three Minutes.

Three minutes. This is it. I have to wait for three minutes. These three minutes will decide the rest of my life. These three minutes will have a more profound effect on me than anything ever has.

These are the thoughts that I have as I wait. I wait for the three minutes to tick by. I watch the clock as it moves slowly. Three minutes. Two minutes. One minute. My palms are sweaty. My heart is racing. Thirty seconds. Tick … tock … tick … tock … time is up. I look down. My heart sinks. Negative. Always negative.

This time I was full of so much hope. I had all the symptoms. Late period. Check. Sore breasts. Check. Emotional. Check. Heartburn. Check. I had it in the bag. It was a sure thing. A sure thing that, although this moment was 6 years ago, has never happened. A sure thing that has given me nothing but heartbreak and sorrow. A sure thing that has changed the way I live my life and the person that I have become. A sure thing that I’m not convinced will ever be sure.

***

I am 29 years old. I am a senior in College. My decision to start school when I was 25 years old was directly affected by my inability to become pregnant.

When I was younger and thinking of the future I would have, where I am now was not even a possibility. I would grow up, find the man I love, get married and have lots of babies… in other words, I would be my mother. Time passed. I grew up, I found and married the man I love… and that is where my life long goal stopped. I never anticipated working outside of the home. I never anticipated going to college. I never anticipated settling on being the world’s best aunt instead of the world’s perfect mother. But that is what I have done because this is where life has taken me.

When I meet new people for the first time, they always want to know how long I have been married. When I tell them that I married my high school sweetheart and that we have been married for almost 10 years, they are shocked. Then they ask the inevitable question. How many kids do you have? They seem to be more shocked at this answer. None. You don’t have kids? No. We don’t have any kids. Why not? I know it’s not any of my business, but why don’t you have kids? And off we go. That is how the conversations go. Each time. They are tiring, they are repetitive and they are heartbreaking.

When someone close to me notices me noticing a baby, they tilt their head, they look at me, and they ask me if I am okay. My automatic response is yes. Look how cute that baby is. She looks just like her mom. End of conversation. As long as they think I am ok. Inside, my heart is breaking as I take in every detail about the baby. I can smell the baby lotion. I can hear the whimpers and the cooing. I can see the birth marks. I can see the joy in the mother’s tired eyes. I can’t say a word. I never say a word. It’s not about me. It’s about the joy of the new baby. I celebrate for the happy family and mourn for mine all at the same moment.

I have 14 biological nephews and nieces and one on the way. I love each and every one of them. Each one of them is special to me. Each one of them brings me hope. I like to imagine as I’m holding them that they know the children that are meant to be mine. I like to think that the veil between heaven and earth is very thin for them. It brings me hope to think that they know they will see their little friends again soon. The first time I thought this was 5 years ago. Is 5 years too long to hold on to such hope? I’d like to think that it isn’t. I need to think that it isn’t.

When someone close to me tells me they are expecting, I react graciously. I have mastered the skill of hiding my true emotion. You’re expecting? I’m so surprised! I’m so happy for you {here we go again}. You’ve been sick? I’m sorry you’re not feeling well {some people would give anything to have morning sickness}. Did you try for this one? Four months? Yes. That is a long time to try {wow, four months – they are so lucky}. This is a surprise? Wow! I’m so happy for you. I am sorry you feel so overwhelmed {I have been waiting for 6 years for that kind of surprise}. Congratulations. Please excuse me, I need to use the restroom {I need to compose myself so that I can truly be happy for another child to love}.

My husband is my best friend. He is my rock. The person who holds my hand and strokes my hair when I’ve found out another person is expecting. It is hard for him too. He is the best person I know. He is the best uncle in the world. He will be the best father… someday… He loves children. He wants his own so badly. His children will be beautiful. I want them to have his beautiful eyes, and his smile. He has a smile that can cure any ailment. Our relationship has changed. It has matured, it has grown. Our relationship has surpassed my expectations. We are happy. Despite being unable to get pregnant, we are happy. Some couples would pull apart. We are not one of those couples. This has strengthened us.

I never thought I’d find myself at a four year college. I graduated High School in 1998. Seven years of being out of school is a long time. I went back to school in 2005 with the intent of dropping out the day the test appears positive. Four years have passed since my first day at USU. I am almost finished with my bachelor’s degree. I took two and a half years of generals because I didn’t know who I was. I didn’t know what I wanted to be. I wanted to be a mom. I am a different person than I was four years ago. I know more, I believe different things, and I am committed to finishing my education. It will make me a better mother.

I am grateful for this experience. You are grateful? How can you be grateful for this? I am not the same person I was 7 years ago when we started talking about having children. I am better. I am more confident. I am healthier. I am my own person. My self esteem is not based on what other people think. I am me. How can I be a mother when I don’t know who I am? When I don’t know what I believe? God has given me an unexpected gift. He has given me time to find out who I am. He has given me time to strengthen my marriage. He has held my hand through times of anger and through much heartbreak. He has led me into the light with the understanding that everything happens for a reason, even though it is hard.

I have expressed every emotion possible through this experience. I have been angry. I have hated – not anyone in particular, just the facts of the situation. I have been bitter. I have been jealous. I have been sad. I have said things that I have not truly meant and I have meant things that I have never said. I have had my heart broken in two.

My husband is the only one that I can share my true feelings with. The subject is too heavy for random discussion. But, I will let my mother read this paper. I will let my sisters read this paper. I will let my husband’s family read this paper. Not because I want them to feel sorry for me, but because they ask me how I am doing and I lie. I tell them I am fine. I tell them that I am okay with the way that life has worked out, but I’m not. I want to be a mom. That’s it. I am going to school and am training for a career that I believe in and that I love, but I want to be a mom. They may try to understand what I tell them, but they don’t know how I feel. Not yet. They will. They will finally understand what my heart longs to say during casual conversation.

I have coped. I may not fully understand why this is happening to us, but I am dealing. I understand that this is my trial. It is hard. Every day it is hard. When I wake up in the morning I have to decide if I am going to pretend to be happy or if I am going to truly be happy. It has been an emotional hell that I have risen above. I have coped. I have not let it freeze me. I have learned how to let myself be truly happy despite this. It hung over me like a dark cloud for so many years, but I have taken my life back. Most days, I choose to truly be happy. I am proud - of myself, of my husband, of us.

***
Women who struggle with infertility are my sisters. They are my heroes. It is hard for them to say what they want to say because most people don’t understand what they are experiencing. Women are raised to make babies. It is our calling in life. Being unable to fulfill that calling is like feeling you have let the whole world down.

Everyone knows someone who is struggling with infertility. Be there for them. Don’t be shocked when they cry for no reason or when they look sad in a joyous situation. Be tactful – think before you speak. Know that simple comments cause sorrow and heartbreak, even for someone who has found acceptance. Understand where they are at in the grieving process. That is what we go through. Anger. Denial. Bargaining. Depression. Acceptance. Acceptance is sweet. It brings peace.

To a lot of people, three minutes is not a big deal. To women who have struggled with infertility, three minutes can change their life. Happiness is possible through their trial. Don’t push them. They will get there. They will get past their three minutes.

Let Freedom Ring

I am quite ashamed to admit that I have not heard the "I Have a Dream Speech" since I learned about Martin Luther King Jr. in school. I looked it up on YouTube today (because I feel guilty for getting a paid day off for a holiday that was created for the freedom of ancestors that weren't mine and that most people don't think twice about) and watched it. I've posted it below for those of you who haven't sent it for a while as well!

I am grateful to Martin Luther King Jr., for his insight and for his ferocity, and for his courage to make this speech. I hope that you can all take the time today to be grateful for the Freedoms that we ALL enjoy, including a paid day off.
